Super Bowl XLV (Greenbay Packers vs. Pittsburg Steelers) Home Party Ideas

Planning a Super Bowl party? Going to a Super Bowl party at someone else's house? Don't know what to cook, bake, how to decorate, what drinks to have on hand.... etc, etc? Well, whether you're throwing the party or attending the Super Bowl XLV party this Sunday, February 6th, night, you're going to need some great party- planning ideas.
Here are some of my simple, easy, favorite ideas! Enjoy. Want more? Have questions- leave a note or send me an email- I'd be happy to help you out!

        Decorations:
Are you a die-hard Packer Backer? A Steeler fanatic sporting black and gold every chance you get? Throw your party (or take it to the other guests if you're traveling!) by having over-the-top green and yellow or black and gold decorations

  •   Paint a "G", Green Bay's logo, or a Pitts on a piece of butcher paper or wood... in green/gold or black/gold colors. Place it on a wall or by the food, and instantly add a festive touch.\
  •   Have an old jersey? (If you're a huge fan- of course you do!) Place the jersey in a frame and hang by the TV!
  • Collect anything- as random as it is- around your house (vases, beads, fabric, sheets, flowers, plates, etc)....cluster these "things" all around the room(s) that your guests will be in. I love the look of multiple gold vases together- filled, or not filled (with beads!). The sheets you have in your team colors? If you want to keep these intact, use them to tuck behind bottles, pictures, or in a basket (filled with food, games, or drinks!). If you don't mind cutting them apart, re-purpose them into easy pillows (how to make pillows?) (Cut two pieces of your sheet or fabric in one inch larger than the size that you want your pillow to be. Then, put both "good" sides together, sew around the edges, minus a little three inch area, stuff it with stuffing (a good, inexpensive one is "Mountain Mist" Poly Stuffing that you can buy online or in an craft store or craft section of most stores is good for this purpose), and sew up the little area you had leftover, and you have team colors decorative pillows! Easy! Or, with the fabric, cut strips and make into pom-poms! (Cut a bunch, tie with a rubber band, and pass out!)
  • Buy gift-wrapping bows, yarn, ribbon. Use the bows around the house, tie ribbon the the backs of bar stools for festive pops of color, and use the yarn to tie in a bow for napkins, favors, or to tie around the bottom of wine glasses!
Drink:
Make a punch (spiked or kid-friendly!) in your team colors.
For Green Bay fans, try this wonderful  "Green Punch" recipe, from my absolute favorite recipe site, allrecipes.com

It gets nice and frothy on top as an added bonus! Serve with gold orange juice ice cubes, and you're all set for the Packer victory!

A Pittsburgh fan? Try this "Golden Punch" recipe recipe for a gold punch, also from allrecipes.com.com.
I would serve this punch in black plastic cups, or in clear, with black cocktail napkins nearby, to get the full Steelers effect!

In addition to these adult or kid- friendly punches.... Most Super Bowl parties wouldn't be complete with at least a little beer. The majority of grocery stores have specials on their drinks/ beer this week, and you can even buy certain brands of beer to "match" your team colors! Have a large bowl in the color? Fill it with ice and stick the beer in it!
Food:
Steelers fans? How about chocolate chip/butterscotch chip cookies? Use your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, but add half the amount of chocolate chips it calls for, and the rest butterscotch chips! Yum.
Packer fans? Try a regular yellow-cake mix (in two round cake pans, or a bundt pan), then make homemade or buy regular white frosting at the grocery store... When you have the frosting, spoon into a small mixing bowl, then add green food coloring, a couple drops at a time, and stir, until the frosting color becomes the beloved Green Bay green! Top your yellow cake, and wa-lah! (Pittsburgh fans can also use the same concept, except with chocolate cake and gold frosting!)
Now that you have a couple drink and desert ideas, how about for the other snacks and food? Personally, I think the best parties are where hosts have a lot of different options for food. My favorites (and some quick, easy recipes to go along with them!)....
  • Little smokies- (1 bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce (I like KC Masterpiece), 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup ketchup, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 cup chopped onion, a sprinkle of onion powder, garlic powder, and salt and pepper, 2 packages little wieners, and 2 tablespoons whiskey (the alcohol cooks off, don't worry!). Mix everything together in a bowl, then pour in to a slow-cooker, and let cook for at least 2 hours on low, or really as long as you need them to cook!
  • Meatballs- (Buy hamburger meat in however much you need, depending on the size of your party. I usually make around 40-50. Roll into small "balls", then place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes, or until they're no longer pink in the center. Or, if you'd rather not make these yourself, you can buy frozen, pre
  • Chicken hot wing dip- my personal favorite! (1 package cream cheese, 1/2 cup ranch or blue cheese dressing, 11/2 cups diced, cooked chicken, 3/4 cup cheddar cheese, 3/4 cup pepper sauce (I love Franks Red Hot). Mix together in a small slow cooker, heat on low for about 2 hours, or high for 1 hour. Serve with celery sticks and tortilla chips! *Double recipe as needed.
  • Pizza! Order a pizza on Super Bowl night, and you'll probably get a heck of a deal. Most major pizza chains will offer discounts on pizza. Order from Papa Johns online, and you could also win a free one!
Need a hostess gift/ going to someone else's party? Bring one of the food options listed above, or how about a bottle of wine with a decorative team-color ribbon, a pretty potted plant (small cacti are wonderful!...cheap and easy to care for!), a candle, something for their kitchen, or, since it is Super Bowl Sunday- how about a copy of the latest Sports Illustrated? A team t-shirt? I also LOVE a set of team inspired glasses/cups as a gift.
Hopefully this inspired you to plan your upcoming Super Bowl party! Go Packers OR Steelers! (As a San Francisco 49ers, then Chicago Bears fan... I don't really care :))
